PHOENIX — It’s only going to get hotter in Phoenix the next couple of days, which is a bad omen considering a 44-year-old daily record was broken on Friday.

The mercury reached 112 degrees at about 2:10 p.m., surpassing the previous high for June 10 of 111 degrees set in 1978, according to the National Weather Service.

The high could jump a degree or two before the end of the day, signaling only the start of a scorching hot weekend.

Saturday’s high is supposed to be 114 degrees, which would be the hottest day in Phoenix this year.

Sunday is forecast to reach 113 degrees.

An excessive heat warning is in effect for Phoenix through 8 p.m. Sunday.

From 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. each day during the excessive heat warning, Phoenix will close Camelback Mountain’s Echo and Cholla trails and all trails associated with Piestewa Peak Trailhead.

Meanwhile, the Salvation Army has activated 11 heat relief stations from 11 a.m. to 5 p.m. through Sunday, offering people in need a place to go for indoor cooling and hydration.

The heat relief stations are located in Phoenix, Chandler, Glendale, Mesa, Tempe, Surprise, Avondale and Apache Junction.

A list of locations can be found on the nonprofit’s website.
