PHOENIX — Autonomous driving technology company Waymo announced Wednesday it plans to begin driving at Phoenix Sky Harbor International Airport.

Waymo said the service would begin with a specialist present to learn the airport’s busy roads and parking lots before being tested by Waymo employees who will hail rides between downtown Phoenix and Sky Harbor. The service would then expand to members of the company’s Trusted Tester program.

Operations for the service would be based around the area of the 44th Street Phoenix Sky Train Station, according to a press release, and the company’s Jaguar I-PACEs will eventually drive autonomously at the airport during all hours of the day and night.

Waymo also announced it was opening up autonomous rides in downtown Phoenix to employees of the company after expanding to the area earlier this year, which is following a similar model to what is planned for Sky Harbor Airport.

No date was provided on when fully autonomous rides would be available to the public in downtown Phoenix or at Sky Harbor Airport.

Waymo has been operating in the East Valley since 2017 and introduced fully autonomous public rides in 2020.
