“Congratulations to the best local news team in the country!” said Ryan Hatch, senior vice president/market manager for Bonneville Phoenix, which operates KTAR News.
“All three awards are a testament to the important work KTAR News does every day, but winning the overall excellence award through a pandemic and the political world challenging the legitimacy of an election in our own backyard makes it that much more special.”
The station’s overall excellence entry included coverage of the Cyber Ninjas’ audit of the 2020 election in Maricopa County, the impact of COVID-19 in Arizona and our special series on “Arizona’s Rising Real Estate.”
The breaking news award was for coverage of the shooting of Phoenix Police Officer Tyler Moldovan on Dec. 14, 2021.
Griselda Zetino’s report about a young Phoenix father’s battle with COVID-19 won the hard news award. The story aired on April 23, 2021.
Regional Murrow Awards are presented to large and small radio, TV and digital outlets in 14 geographic regions, with Arizona part of Region 3 along with Colorado, New Mexico, Utah and Wyoming.
The regional winners are automatically in the running for a National Murrow Award.
The Radio Television Digital News Association started announcing the regional winners on Tuesday and will continue with one region per weekday through May 27.
Last month, KTAR News was selected as a recipient of the prestigious Crystal Award by the National Association of Broadcasters for its outstanding year-round commitment to community service.
