PHOENIX – Two children were hospitalized Friday after being pulled out of a burning apartment complex in Mesa, authorities said.
Crews arrived at the complex on Gilbert Road just north of U.S. 60 to find two second-floor units involved, the Mesa Fire and Medical Department said in a press release.
One of the children was carried out by a family member. The other was rescued by a police officer who stood on a shed to gain access to a balcony, the department said.
The pediatric patients, whose age and sex were not given, were taken to Banner Desert Medical Center. Mesa Fire didn’t provide information about their condition.
It took more than 50 police and fire personnel to secure the scene, Mesa Fire said.
The blaze was nearly under control when flames extended into the attic, but ladder crews were able to stop it from spreading to other apartments.
No firefighters were injured. The cause of the blaze is under investigation.
No other information was immediately available.
