PHOENIX — Nine Phoenix police officers were injured in a standoff with a gunman on Friday, the FBI has issued an arrest warrant for a man suspected of shooting an Arizona tribal police officer, and Scottsdale police arrested a man suspected of killing a member of the Special Olympics team.

Here are some of the biggest stories that headlined the Arizona news cycle over the weekend.

9 Phoenix police officers injured in ambush; 2 people dead

Five police officers were shot and four others were injured by shrapnel or bullet fragments while responding to a shooting call at a Phoenix home early Friday, authorities said.

All of the injured officers were expected to survive.

Shatifah Lobley, 29, was identified as the woman shot inside the home and later died at a hospital, police said on Saturday.

The threat ended when the suspect, 36-year-old Morris Jones, was found dead in the house located in a residential area near 51st Avenue and Broadway Road.

Arrest warrant issued for suspect in shooting of Arizona tribal police officer

The FBI announced Friday that an arrest warrant has been issued for the man suspected of shooting an Arizona tribal police officer.

The agency also said it was offering a $5,000 reward for information leading to an arrest in the Wednesday night shooting of Yavapai-Apache Police Sgt. Preston Brogdon.

The FBI said Thursday that 39-year-old Valentin Rodriguez was wanted for questioning, but now officials are calling him a suspect in the assault of a federal officer.

Rodriguez is described as a 5-foot, 9-inch Hispanic male who weighs around 160 pounds and has black hair and brown eyes.

Anybody with information about his whereabouts was asked to call the FBI in Phoenix at 623-466-1999.

Police arrest man suspected of killing Special Olympics athlete in Scottsdale

Police arrested a man suspected of killing a member of the Special Olympics team in Scottsdale earlier in the week, authorities said.

John Merryman, 38, was arrested without incident Friday morning after detectives launched an investigation Sunday morning into the death of Scott Harkness, the Scottsdale Police Department said in a press release.

Harkness was found shot on the side of the road near Hayden and Camelback roads after gunshots were reported around 1 a.m., according to police.

He died at a local hospital from his injuries, police said.

18-year-old dead after allegedly being shot by brother in Phoenix

Police are investigating the death of an 18-year-old man after he was shot in Phoenix, authorities said.

Officers responded to reports of a shooting around 3:45 p.m. Saturday near 44th Street and McDowell Road, the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release.

When they arrived, a man in the parking lot told them he shot his brother, who police have identified as Dameon Glover.

Witnesses reported the two were in an argument, which escalated to the both of them producing firearms, police said.

Glover died on scene from his injuries.

Tempe moves to preserve, redevelop Hayden Flour Mill

After more than two decades closed, officials are moving to preserve and redevelop Tempe’s Hayden Flour Mill.

The city on Thursday entered into negotiations with construction and redevelopment companies Venue Projects and Sunbelt Holdings to keep the 5-acre flour mill property a landmark, officials said in a press release.

Once a draft of the development agreement has been created, it will head back to the City Council for approval. No timeline has been set for when the draft will make its way at the future public meeting.

The proposed plan includes uses oriented toward specialty retail food and beverage, arts, and hospitality.
