PHOENIX – In what world could a 1976 AMC Pacer be worthy of more than $70,000? In “Wayne’s World,” of course.
Yes, the actual Mirthmobile from the classic 1992 comedy sold for $71,500 on Wednesday at the Barrett-Jackson collector car auction in Scottsdale.
The price was a record for a Pacer, according to the event’s website, and nearly double the $37,400 the famous movie car fetched at the 2016 Barrett-Jackson auction in Las Vegas.
With its flame decals, roof-mounted licorice dispenser and dashboard cup dispenser, the baby blue coupe is perfect for headbanging and heading over to Stan Mikita’s Donuts for coffee and crullers, just like Wayne and Garth.
The Mirthmobile was part of a collection at the auction that included another 1976 Pacer, a well-preserved red specimen that drew a winning bid of $34,100.00.
The Barrett-Jackson 50th anniversary edition started last weekend at WestWorld of Scottsdale and concludes Sunday. It’s being televised by FYI and the History Channel and livestreamed on the event’s website.
Barrett-Jackson holds live auctions each year in Houston, Las Vegas, Palm Beach (Florida) and Scottsdale.
