PHOENIX — A celebration of life will be held Friday for former Goodyear Mayor Georgia Lord, who died last month at the age of 83, the city announced.

The memorial service will take place at Goodyear Civic Square Park on the northwest corner of 150th Drive and McDowell Road beginning at 10:30 a.m. and be livestreamed on the city’s Facebook, Instagram, Twitter and YouTube pages.

People scheduled to speak at the service include Gov. Doug Ducey, Vice Mayor Brannon Hampton, Goodyear council members Sheri Lauritano and Wally Campbell, Rep. Joanne Osborne, as well as former mayors Jackie Meck (Buckeye), Jenn Daniels (Gilbert) and Elaine Scruggs (Glendale).

Goodyear Mayor Joe Pizzillo, who was appointed by the city council to take over for Lord and serve the remainder of her term that lasts through the end of this year, will also speak.

Lord prior to her death on Dec. 12 had recently fallen at home and broken her hip, which ultimately led to a decline in health, city officials previously said.

She was elected as Goodyear’s first female mayor in 2011 after moving to the state in 1997 with her husband Col. Ronald Lord.

Lord began her career in government when she was elected to the Goodyear City Council in 2005.

City officials said it was decided to hold the celebration of life at Goodyear Civic Square Park, which is set to open this summer, because Lord for decades had been a part of the ongoing effort to create a city center project.

We want to hear from you.
