PHOENIX — A 3-year-old Phoenix boy who fell into a backyard pool and was hospitalized in critical condition has died, authorities said Thursday.

The Phoenix Police Department told KTAR News 92.3 FM that the child was pulled from a swimming pool near Bell Road and 19th Avenue on Wednesday.

First responders found people performing CPR on the boy, who was not breathing on his own and had no heartbeat, the Phoenix Fire Department said in a press release.

He was rushed to a hospital, where he was pronounced dead.

An investigation continues, police said.

“Drowning is obviously something that can happen year-round,” Sgt. Philip Krynsky said. “Take the same precautions regardless of the time of year – keeping children away from pools and large bodies of water.”

No additional information was immediately available.
