PHOENIX — The Goodyear City Council will appoint a new mayor during a special meeting Friday following the death of Georgia Lord last weekend.
The meeting will take place at 3 p.m. and be held at the Goodyear Council Chambers at 14455 W. Van Buren St., Suite B101. It will also be live-streamed on Goodyear’s Facebook and YouTube channels as well as on the city’s website.
The new mayor will be appointed from one of the council members, with Vice Mayor Brannon Hampton currently serving as acting mayor since Lord’s death Sunday afternoon.
Lord had recently fallen at home and broke her hip, ultimately leading to a decline in her health, city officials said in a press release.
The council member chosen as the city’s new mayor will serve the remainder of Lord’s term, which goes through December of next year.
An election will be held in fall 2022 to select a new mayor that will take office in January 2023.
Lord was elected as Goodyear’s first female mayor in 2011 after moving to the state in 1997 with her husband Col. Ronald Lord.
She began her career in government when she was elected to the Goodyear City Council in 2005.
