PHOENIX — Sunrise Park Resort announced Sunday it plans to open the 2021-22 winter season on Dec. 10, a week later than the projected date.
The eastern Arizona ski resort said the opening date was adjusted based on weather and challenging snowmaking conditions, and plans to open Midway and the Bunny Hill before expanding to other trails as soon as possible.
Once the season begins, the resort will be open daily from 9 a.m. to 4 p.m. Tickets can be purchased online.
Resort staff said they have dealt with dramatic inversions throughout the mountain, such as the base being 27 degrees but the temperature rising to above 30 degrees a few hundred feet up.
The wet-bulb temperature, which the resort said is the combination of actual air temperature and the amount of moisture in the air, is another factor the staff is contending with.
High humidity has resulted in the wet-bulb being near or above ideal freezing temperatures, the resort said, with snowmaking being most efficient when the wet-bulb temperature is well below freezing.
The 2020-21 season began on Dec. 18 and came to an end on March 14.
