PHOENIX – A United States Postal Service worker was killed Tuesday when his mail truck was struck from behind and caught fire on a Phoenix street, authorities said.

The postal vehicle was pulled over next to a mailbox on 52nd Street near McDowell Road when a southbound box truck hit it around 6:15 p.m., the Phoenix Police Department said in a press release Wednesday.

The postal worker, 59-year-old Michael Blanton, was pronounced dead at the scene, police said. The truck driver, an unidentified 35-year-old man, was hospitalized with serious injuries.

Police said there were no preliminary signs of impairment for either man.

No other information was immediately available.
