PHOENIX – A wrong-way driver crashed on a West Valley freeway early Wednesday morning and has died, authorities said.

The wreck shut down northbound Agua Fria Freeway Loop 101 at Cardinals Way in Glendale around 1:30 a.m., the Arizona Department of Public Safety said.

An agency spokesman said a man driving a Hyunda Elantra got onto an exit ramp and smashed head-on into a semi truck.

He was taken to a hospital where he was pronounced dead.

Lanes reopened around 6:15 a.m.

No one else was injured.

The investigation is ongoing but DPS said driver impairment could be a contributing factor.

No other details were immediately available.
