PHOENIX – Memorial services for former Arizona Attorney General Grant Woods have been set for Nov. 12 in downtown Phoenix.
A celebration of Woods’ life will be held at the Orpheum Theater on Adams Street at Second Avenue at 10 a.m. The service was originally set for Phoenix’s All Saints Episcopal Church but was relocated to a larger venue.
Cindy McCain, a longtime family friend, and former NBA star Charles Barkley are among those expected to deliver eulogies.
Pastor Warren Stewart of the First Institutional Baptist Church in Phoenix, who worked with Woods to help establish a paid Martin Luther King holiday in the the state in 1992, will officiate.
Woods, 67, died Oct. 23.
“The outpouring of love and help for our family after Grant’s shocking passing has been extraordinary. Thank you from the bottom of our hearts,” Woods’ widow, Marlene Galan Woods, said in a press release.
“My children and I are forever grateful for the kindness and love we have been graced with by so many friends.”
The family asks that instead of flowers, send donations in Woods’ honor to the Boys & Girls Clubs of the Valley.
Woods, who grew up in Mesa, founded that city’s branch of the after-school organization. The East Valley city eventually renamed its site in his honor in 1994.
