PHOENIX — A California man suspected of murder was arrested at a bus station in Tucson on Monday, authorities said.
Clarence Johnson Jr., 33, was taken into custody after he was found entering a Greyhound bus station with a ticket to Arkansas in a continued attempt to flee from murder charges in the death of his cousin in Oakland, the U.S. Marshals Service said in a press release on Tuesday.
He is in custody at the Pima County Jail awaiting extradition back to Oakland, authorities said.
Johnson is accused of fatally shooting his cousin in the head after an argument broke out between the two on Aug. 18, authorities said. He was also wanted on a parole violation warrant for a prior manslaughter conviction in 2010.
Authorities learned Johnson fled California shortly after the shooting and that he could be in Tucson.
Members of the Arizona WANTED Violent Offender Task Force in Tucson began working the case and exploring leads on Johnson’s possible locations on Monday, authorities said, leading them to the Greyhound bus station.
“The arrest of Clarence Johnson Jr. is a good example of federal and local law enforcement agencies working together across state lines to get a dangerous person into custody,” U.S. Marshal David Gonzales said in the release.
