PHOENIX — The sixth-annual Bashas’ Donut Flavor Craze Contest is down to 13 contestants.
A panel of judges has named five adults, five kids and three Bashas’ store employees as their finalists in their donut flavor contest.
Contestants were asked to create a new donut flavor based on their previous travel experiences.
Final flavors include a vanilla-flavored donut dipped in dolce de leche, a raised jelly donut stuffed with pineapple jelly and glazed with coconut, a Limoncello-flavored cake donut with raspberry icing and a Bavarian-cream-filled donut topped with chocolate icing.
The entries were judged by a variety of factors including flavor combination, name of the creation, a 100-word description and key ingredients in making the sweet treats.
The groups were broken down into three categories: kids from ages eight to 17, adults 18 years and older and Bashas’ store employees.
A winner from each group will be selected on June 4 for National Donut Day by a panel of local celebrity judges.
Each winning contestant will have their donuts featured in Bashas’ bakery departments throughout the state, receive $500 worth of prizes including a Bashas’ grocery gift card and cooking sets, be named an official Bashas’ Donut Ambassadors for the year, and will receive one dozen donuts every month for the next year.
The runner-up in each group will walk away with a $50 Bashas’ gift card and the third place finishers will receive a $20 grocery gift card.
