Grand Canyon’s Silver Bridge to close temporarily for electrical repairs

PHOENIX — A bridge hikers use to cross the Colorado River in the Grand Canyon will close temporarily for repairs beginning Tuesday, the National Park Service announced.
The Silver Bridge along the Bright Angel trail near Phantom Ranch will be closed to all foot traffic Monday-Friday from 8 a.m. to 5 p.m. for necessary electrical utility repairs through May 7.
However, the bridge will be fully accessible to hikers on the weekends, according to NPS.
Hikers can plan an alternate route over the Black Bridge at the base of the South Kaibab Trail, which will add 1 mile to the hike, or can plan on crossing the Silver Bridge before 8 a.m. or after 5 p.m.
The Silver Bridge is a suspension bridge was built in the late 1960s to connect the Bright Angel trail from the South Rim to Phantom Ranch and the North Rim.
Additionally, hikers could experience brief delays along the River Trail between Pipe Creek and the Silver Bridge as crews work along the trail on utility lines, though the trail will stay open.
