New appointments quickly filled for Tucson state-run COVID-19 vaccine site

PHOENIX – All of the nearly 12,000 new appointments for the state-run COVID-19 vaccination site at the University of Arizona were snapped up in about 2½ hours Tuesday morning.

Registration via the Arizona Department of Health Services website or over the phone started at 9 a.m. The department tweeted just after 11:30 a.m. that all the slots were filled.

The Tucson campus will begin distributing the COVID-19 doses on a large scale starting Thursday.

The school had already been offering the vaccine to employees and students during the daytime, but eventually will be able to run 24/7 as the third state-run mass-vaccination site.

State Farm Stadium in Glendale, the first state-run site, operates all day and all night. Phoenix Municipal Stadium, the second state-run facility, is only open during the day. Each has the capacity to give 12,000 shots a day but are operating below that level because of short supply.

Once the UArizona site reaches full capacity, also depending on vaccine availability, it can serve up to 6,000 people per day.
