Goodyear kicking off 75th anniversary celebrations with virtual ceremony
PHOENIX — The city of Goodyear is kicking off a yearlong celebration of its 75th anniversary with a virtual ceremony Friday.
A small ceremony, held at Loma Linda Park, will include comments from a local historian, a video of the city in its early development and a speech by Mayor Georgia Lord, according to the city.
“Goodyear is thriving, and we look forward to celebrating with our residents all the things that make it a great time to be in Goodyear,” Lord said in a press release.
“The celebrations might look different with the pandemic, but our common pride and love for the city will still shine.”
Goodyear’s anniversary date is Nov. 19, but the city plans to celebrate with various events throughout the year.
One form of celebration is through an art installation called “Goodyear Hearts.” Local artists have decorated 10 fiberglass hearts, located around the city, to each represent a decade in Goodyear’s history.
The city is also creating a time capsule, to be sealed in November, that will then be opened on the 100th anniversary in 2046.
Goodyear residents can submit ideas online for objects to add to the capsule.
