PHOENIX — Maricopa County Attorney Allister Adel underwent emergency surgery for bleeding in the brain after being rushed to the hospital Tuesday night.
“She is currently in serious but stable condition,” Jennifer Liewer, a spokeswoman for Adel, said in a statement Wednesday morning.
“Her family is grateful for the outpouring of support and asks for continued prayers for Allister. This is understandably a very difficult situation and we ask that their privacy be respected at this time.”
Adel is seeking to retain office after she was appointed in October 2019.
The Republican was in a tightly contested race with Democrat Julie Gunnigle for the position as of Tuesday night.
Gunnigle offered her support for Adel in a tweet.
“My thoughts are with Allister and her family. We should give them privacy in this moment and we wish for a full recovery,” Gunnigle said.
The winner would be the first woman to be elected as the Maricopa County Attorney.
