Northbound State Route 87 to be restricted over Fourth of July weekend
PHOENIX — The Arizona Department of Transportation announced Tuesday that repairs along a 13-mile stretch of State Route 87 due to the Bush Fire will restrict traffic over the Fourth of July weekend.
Repairs to guardrails and fencing have forced a right lane closure between mileposts 223 and 236 since SR 87 reopened in both directions on June 23.
ADOT has advised travelers to account for extra travel time or use alternate routes if driving to Payson and eastern mountain areas.
Weekend travelers should consider Interstate 17 to SR 260 as an alternate route to Payson and U.S. 60 as an alternate route to the White Mountains, according to ADOT.
In addition to closing SR 87 between the Bush Highway and Payson, the Bush Fire had also forced the closure of SR 88 between Apache Lake and SR 188 from June 15-23.
The Bush Fire ranked as the fifth-largest fire in state history and was sparked June 13 by a vehicle fire.
As of Monday morning, the blaze had consumed 193,455 acres and was 98% contained.
