PHOENIX – A Phoenix teacher whose after-school math club has helped his students earn credits above their grades is one of May’s recipients of the KTAR News 92.3 FM’s The Gaydos and Chad Show Pay Tribute to a Teacher award.
Christopher Davis, 27, teaches seventh and eighth grades at Magnet Traditional School. He also waits tables part-time.
The math club runs two hours each day of the school week.
“I make sure they’re prepared,” Davis said. That includes feeding them and buying them school supplies on his own.
“That gives them almost every opportunity I can give them.”
The nominating letter said:
“Mr. Davis always goes out of his way to continue to stimulate those kids that excel in algebra and on his own time with no pay, started algebra club and worked hard for the district to now recognize it as an actual class that will give math credits to students at a high school level.”
The fourth-year teacher, whose goal is to become a principal, said he’d spend some of $2,500 prize on decorations for his classroom and toward his Master’s degree.
