Rebel Lounge in Phoenix unveils Arizona-themed mural
PHOENIX — A new Arizona-themed mural featuring the work of local artists is gracing the central Phoenix area.
The Rebel Lounge concert venue, near Indian School Road and 24th Street, unveiled the unique artwork Tuesday.
The painting features the word “Arizona” written across a background of the Superstition Mountains.
Local artists were each given the freedom to fill in one of the letters in the 50-foot-long state name with whatever they wanted, as long as it was colorful.
The artists who contributed are:
- Background: Joe Pagac
- A: Ashley Macias
- R: BASK
- I: Joshua Rhodes
- Z: Clay Halling
- O: Andy Brown
- N: Volar
- A: JB Snyder
“We knew we wanted something memorable on this wall. Something that bands touring through would see and remember,” owner Stephen Chilton said on the venue’s website.
The building first opened as The Mason Jar in 1979 and was known for hosting rocks bands, including Green Day, Nirvana and Guns N’ Roses as they became household names.
It closed as a music venue in 2004 and operated as LGBT-friendly bars until it reopened in 2015 as The Rebel Lounge, according to the Phoenix New Times.
