Democrats gaining ground in Maricopa County, new numbers show

PHOENIX — Democrats are gaining ground in Maricopa County, according to new data from the Arizona Secretary of State’s Office.

The numbers showed that from January to July, Democrats gained 9,822 registered voters in the state’s most populated county, while Republicans saw 8,179.

“(The) latest voter registration numbers indicate that Democrats are gaining ground in Arizona’s most Republican-rich county, which is Maricopa County, while the GOP is making gains in the rural counties,” Mike Noble, chief of research at OH Predictive Insights, told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Friday.

“This trend is not good for the GOP, because Maricopa County is the key to winning a statewide election in Arizona,” Noble said.

However, at about 819,000 voters, Republicans still outnumber Democrats in the county by about 128,000.

The total number of registered voters in Arizona grew by about 50,000 voters in the second quarter of 2019.

The Secretary of State’s Office said there are now 3.82 million active registered voters in the state.

“An increase in the number of qualified, registered voters is good news for our state,” Secretary of State Katie Hobbs said in a press release.

“It is an indication that more people are getting involved and are interested in participating in their government.”
