Phoenix-area monsoon storms, cooler temperatures expected this week

PHOENIX — After a warm weekend, monsoon storms are expected to cool down the Phoenix area a bit later this week.

“The amount of moisture really increases today and tomorrow, so that will really bump up the thunderstorm chances,” Jaret Rogers with the National Weather Service told KTAR News 92.3 FM on Monday.

Rogers said the highest chance of a storm comes Tuesday evening into Wednesday morning, with some precipitation sticking around through the afternoon.

According to ABC15, there is a 30% chance of rain on those days.

“We’re off to the second-driest start since the start of the monsoon, which is 0.04 inches at Sky Harbor,” Rogers said.

“It’s been a very quiet start so far, but we’ll see if those totals increase over the next few days.”

Dust may also been issue midweek, with the highest threat coming Tuesday evening.

While Monday morning marked the third day in a row of tying record warm low temperatures, some relief is on the way.

The mercury is expected to drop by more than 10 degrees, from a high of 109 on Monday to 98 on Wednesday.

Rogers said the dryness and heat will return toward the end of the week, though.

“We’ll still have some moisture lingering around, so we’ll still have slight chance for thunderstorms each day,” he said.

“But it does dry out some, and we’ll see a warming trend as well into the weekend with highs right around 107.”

KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Jim Cross contributed to this report.
