PHOENIX — Arizona might be the best state in the union for first-time home buyers.

According to WalletHub, Arizona has five cities that rank in the top 30 among 300 cities in the nation.

Peoria, Chandler, Gilbert, Surprise and Scottsdale all came in with scores in the top 10% of the country.

The survey scored cities based on affordability, real-estate market and quality of life. From the category rankings, all cities were given a total score to determine the final ranks.

All five of the Arizona cities received a total score of 62.43 or higher. The top ranked city, Tampa, Fla., received a score of 67.14.

Phoenix, Mesa, Glendale, Tempe, Yuma and Tucson all finished in the top half of the study with Tucson ranking as the worst city in the state at No. 137.

Despite a No. 27 overall ranking, Surprise was named the third-worst city in the country in terms of total home-energy cost.
