PHOENIX – A real estate company that specializes in federal government properties is moving forward on its application to develop a Veterans Affairs outpatient clinic in Phoenix.

U.S. Federal Properties put in a request with the city Planning and Zoning Department for the five-story facility at 32nd and Van Buren streets, AzBex.com reported Tuesday.

The company wants to modify the application that will be heard at the Feb. 20 planning hearing.

The website said its properties were “state-of-art, high-security buildings.”

The website also said its properties were leased by the federal agencies and departments such as the Federal Bureau of Investigation, federal courts and Department of Veterans Affairs, among others.

According to the application, AzBex said, the property “will be fully secured after hours and monitored on a 24-hour basis by security staff …”

The Phoenix VA Medical Center was the epicenter of a systemwide health care crisis in 2014 surrounding long wait times to see a doctor.

An inquiry found the extended wait time was partly responsible for up to 40 deaths.

Three hospital officials were fired for negligence.

A September report from the Department of Veterans Affairs said there had been improvement in the quality of service in the Phoenix VA Healthcare System.

Data showed the medical center, considered “high risk,” had gotten better marks for wait times, standardized mortality rates, call center speed, readmission rate and length of hospital stay.
