Chandler officer with US Marshals shoots, injures suspect in Phoenix

PHOENIX — A Chandler police officer with the U.S. Marshals Task Force shot and injured a suspect in Phoenix early Thursday morning.

Sgt. Armando Carbajal with the Phoenix Police Department said the shooting occurred around 3 a.m. near 19th Avenue and Dunlap Road.

The officer located the 25-year-old man later identified as Antanie Johnson, who is suspected in multiple felonies out of the East Valley, and gave him verbal commands to exit the vehicle he was in, Carbajal said.

In a press release issued Friday, Phoenix police said the officer, a 14-year veteran of the Chandler Police Department, fired his service weapon after the suspect suddenly moved to open the door without his left hand in view.

Johnson still didn’t comply after being shot, the release said, and other officers fired stun bags and stun guns before taking him into custody.

He was taken to the hospital with a non-life threatening injury, and investigators later found a handgun near where he was sitting, police said.

The shooting occurred hours after police in Phoenix shot and killed a man they said attacked an officer on the street Wednesday night.

It was the 43rd officer-involved shooting of the year in Phoenix and second this week. There have been at least 79 officer-involved shootings in the Valley this year.
