PHOENIX — An 81-year-old woman was found stabbed to death by her grandson in an apartment complex in Chandler early on Sunday morning, said Chandler Police spokesperson Seth Tyler.
Officers arrived at the complex at 3:38 a.m after receiving a call from the woman’s grandson, Brandon Smith. The woman, 81-year-old Helen Smith, was found dead at the scene by authorities, police said.
Brandon Smith, who had left the scene, was taken into custody a short time later at a nearby location.
According to the police report, Brandon Smith was taking care of his grandmother, who had urinated in her pants. After helping her to the shower, Brandon Smith slapped her in the face, causing her to fall into the tub unconscious.
Brandon Smith decided he wanted to put an end to his grandmother’s suffering, according to the document. He sliced her throat with a knife from the kitchen.
He was charged and held with first degree murder.
Prior to the incident Brandon Smith was on probation for aggravated assault and had prior convictions for assault and trespassing.
