Arizona school districts that remain closed for teacher walkouts

PHOENIX – The Arizona Education Association announced this week that the teacher walkouts could continue through Thursday, forcing school districts to extend closures.

Educators and supporters gathered at the state Capitol for the last five weekdays to protest low pay and unacceptable school conditions.

Some districts, churches and other Valley organizations have offered additional services and resources for those in need of a place to go for the duration of the walkouts.

Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey announced Friday that he, Rep. J.D. Mesnard and Senate President Sen. Steve Yarbrough had reached a deal that would raise teacher pay by 20 percent in the next two years, an additional $100,000,000 for support staff over a five-year period and no tax increase.

But Joe Thomas, the president of the Arizona Educators Association, and Noah Karvelis, an organizer of Arizona Educators United, rejected the so-called deal in a press release.

“We have no bill. We have no deal. The devil is in the details,” said Thomas and Karvelis. “We know that we have been down this road before. He makes promises that he can’t keep.”

Legislative leaders previously vowed to work through the weekend to finalize the details of the budget so it could be passed this week.

• Dysart Unified School District

• Flagstaff Unified School District

• Florence Unified School District: Announced it would reopen schools on Thursday

• Flowing Wells Unified School District

• Gilbert Public School District

• Glendale Elementary School District

• Glendale Union High School District

• Higley Unified School District

• Humboldt Unified School District

• J.O. Combs Unified School District

• Kingman Unified School District: All schools except Mount Tipton and La Senita will be closed

• Kyrene School District

• Liberty Elementary School District

• Litchfield Elementary School District

• Madison Elementary School District: Madison Park will reopen on Thursday; all other schools would remain closed

• Marana Unified School District

• Maricopa Unified School District

• Mesa Public Schools

• Osborn School District

• Paradise Valley Unified School District

• Pendergast Elementary School District

• Peoria Unified School District

• Phoenix Elementary School District

• Phoenix Union High School District

• Queen Creek Unified School District

• Roosevelt School District

• Sahuarita Unified School District

• Scottsdale Unified School District: Only Ingleside Middle School and Pima Elementary School will reopen on Thursday

• Sierra Vista Unified School District

• Sunnyside Unified School District

• Tempe Elementary School District

• Tempe Union High School District

• Tolleson Elementary School District: Announced it would reopen schools on Thursday

• Tucson Unified School District

• Washington Elementary School District

• Winslow Unified School District
