PHOENIX — A wrong-way rollover collision and a related wreck shut down part of a Phoenix-area freeway early Friday.

Four people from five cars were taken to the hospital from the site on northbound Loop 101 at Guadalupe Road on the Tempe-Mesa border. A spokesman with the Arizona Department of Public Safety said none of the injuries were life-threatening.

The first cars crashed — nearly head-on — around 3 a.m. There had been reports of a speeding car heading south in the northbound lanes for about a mile before the crack-up.

Eventually, the vehicles came to a rest in the HOV and third lanes.

Authorities said the roadway would be closed most of the commuter rush. The ramp reopened around 8:30 a.m.

By 8 a.m. traffic was backed up between Ray and Warner roads.

It was the second wrong-way crash of the year.

The Arizona Department of Transportation said ramps on Loop 202 to Loop 101 North were closed around 5:30 a.m. to keep more traffic away from the closure.

They remained closed after Loop 101 reopened.

No other details were immediately available.

We want to hear from you.
