PHOENIX — Arizona Gov. Doug Ducey ordered flags to fly at half-staff on Wednesday to honor an El Mirage police officer who died chasing a suspect.
Officer Paul Lazinsky, 58, died Tuesday after he had a seizure during the pursuit. He was expected to retire next year after starting at the department in 2000.
Other officers tried to save Lazinsky’s life. He was taken to a hospital, where he died.
“His tragic death is a reminder of the sacrifices our law enforcement make each time they put on their uniform and head out the door,” Ducey said in a release. “My sincere condolences go out to the family and loved ones of Officer Lazinsky, as well as the entire El Mirage community.”
Ducey also said flags will be flown at half-staff the day Lazinsky is buried. The date of the funeral has not been set.
Police Chief Terry McDonald said Lazinsky may be the first El Mirage police officer to die while on duty.
Lazinsky is survived by a wife and three children.
Lazinsky served 20 years in the Army before becoming a police officer.
McDonald said Lazinsky was one of the first officers he met when he joined the department six years ago.
“[Lazinsky] was the absolute voice of reason and was a pleasure to have on board as an officer,” the chief said.
