PHOENIX — An Arizona congresswoman’s campaign for the U.S. Senate is heating up.

U.S. Rep. Kyrsten Sinema has raised more than $1 million in the third quarter of 2017, according to a press release. The Arizona representative now has more than $4.1 million in cash-on-hand.

In a statement, Sinema’s spokeswoman Sacha Haworth said the development shows that Arizonans are “ready for the type of leader who has a track record of working across the aisle to fix what’s broken in Washington.”

“Whether it’s cutting red tape for small businesses or getting a veteran the healthcare he or she deserves, Kyrsten Sinema has delivered for Arizonans, and we’re grateful to have such widespread and enthusiastic support,” Haworth said.

Sinema announced in September that she would run for Senate in an effort to unseat Sen. Jeff Flake, the state’s junior senator. The Arizona representative will also have the support of Sen. Chuck Schumer, the head Democratic member of the Senate.

Flake’s future in the Senate has been in the air due to his ongoing spat with President Donald Trump. Several polls released in August showed the Snowflake resident trailing his primary challenger, former state Sen. Dr. Kelli Ward.

Top Republicans, including Sen. Mitch McConnell, are supporting Flake in the race, but some within the party think he could lose the general election.
