Arizona firefighter wounded in Las Vegas concert shooting

PHOENIX — A firefighter from Lake Havasu was shot and wounded in the Las Vegas shooting that killed more than 50 people and injured at least 520 on Sunday.

Kurt Fowler, a firefighter with the Desert Hills Fire Department, was shot in the leg after a gunman opened fire on an outdoor country music concert.

Fowler was shot in his right leg, which fractured several bones just above his ankle, said fire department Captain Steve Bunn. Bunn said Fowler is currently in surgery but could not comment further on his condition.

Fowler was attending the Route 91 country music festival on Sunday with his wife, Bunn said.

According to a GoFundMe page that is raising money for Fowler’s injuries, the firefighter was “seriously injured” in the shooting. The page has currently raised more than $7,300 of its $10,000 goal.

Mesa officer’s face grazed by bullet

A Mesa police officer was also injured in the shooting after their face was grazed by a bullet. The Mesa officer, whose name was not released, was recovering, according to the police department. Several other off-duty Mesa police officers, but were not injured.

Arizona Department of Public Safety Director Col. Frank Milstead told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Bruce St. James and Pamela Hughes that one of his troopers who attended the concert had shrapnel wounds in his hand and backside.

A DPS employee also suffered shrapnel wounds to her hand.

The wife of a Salt River Police Department officer was also critically injured during the Las Vegas shooting. According to a statement from the police department, the unidentified wife was “transported to a local hospital and is currently receiving treatment.”

The officer, who was not identified by the department, was not injured in the shooting.

University of Arizona alum missing after shooting

Christiana Duarte, an alumna from the University of Arizona, is reportedly missing after attending the Route 91 Music Festival on Sunday.

According to a statement from her sorority, Sigma Kappa, Duarte’s parents said she still has not been found.

“The Zeta Omicron Chapter is aware that one of our alumna members, Christiana Duarte, is missing following the Route 91 Music Festival in Las Vegas,” part of the statement read. “As we await word of Christiana, Sigma Kappa is supporting our members and is praying for all of those impacted by this tragedy.”
