PHOENIX — The Arizona Board of Regents approved the third and final phase of construction on Arizona State University’s football stadium, bringing the total cost of the renovations to more than $300 million.
The final phase of renovation on Sun Devil Stadium will wrap up a 3-plus year construction project that will have amounted to $307.6 million, according to the Regents.
This phase of construction will take place on the east side of the stadium and will include changing the floor-to-ceiling height at the mid-level part of the stadium, adding a fourth level and modifying the upper deck to accommodate those changes.
The interior of the Student-Athlete Facility will be integrated into the north end section of the stadium, while the main concourse will be replaced to connect with the new south end zone concourse. This phase will also include addressing various infrastructure issues.
This phase of construction was put on hold for one year in order to “maximize the university’s opportunity to plan and design” the stadium in a way that would “best facilitate broad usage of the venue for events other than athletics.”
Construction for this phase is scheduled to begin in December and will continue until June 2019. The construction will be put on hold between August and November of 2018 for the university’s football season.
The budget for this phase was increased by $38.9 million, to $134.9 million total. It is the most expensive phase of the three, with phase one costing $65.7 million and phase two, which involved the west side of the stadium, costing $107 million.
