Wrong-way accident shuts down Interstate 17 near Phoenix

Four people were injured in a wrong-way accident that shut down Interstate 17 South about 40 miles north of Phoenix, early Tuesday.

PHOENIX — Four people were seriously injured in a wrong-way accident that shut down Interstate 17 South about 40 miles north of Phoenix, early Tuesday.

Authorities said a passer-by pulled the victims from the wreckage.

The head-on collision stopped traffic near Sunset Point around 2:45 a.m. The road reopened at 6:30 a.m.

The Arizona Department of Public Safety said the cars had caught fire and were burning intensely by the time they arrived.

Two people were flown to hospitals for treatment and another two were also hospitalized.

So ADOT can put up even larger "Wrong Way" signs and cameras to monitor the wrong way drivers, but these things will not STOP them.
Pop up spikes will.
