Overnight thunderstorms rock Valley, more rain comes Sunday

PHOENIX — Thunderstorms hit the Valley Saturday night, bringing more rain on top of what came to start the day.

The storms progressed through the Valley late into the night, with severe thunderstorm warnings beginning from the National Weather Service shortly before 10 p.m. for Surprise, Avondale and Goodyear.

Surprise had some city streets closed due to flooding the next day.

Those warnings would arrive a half-hour later for Mesa, Chandler and Scottsdale.

Flash flood warnings also came for Chandler, Tempe, Guadalupe and Goodyear.

The heavy rain and flooding was also seen in Glendale. Flooding was seen in the streets at Bethany Home Road and 75th Avenue as well as Glendale and 71st Avenues.

Those storms brought plenty of thunder and rain to those out late, including those returning from the Arizona Cardinals preseason game against the Oakland Raiders, which wrapped up at the beginning of the storms around 10 p.m.

The 24-hour rain totals were high, including over two inches of rain in the center of Glendale, with regions near Sun City West, Litchfield Park, Chandler and downtown Phoenix having over an inch of rain.

It even marked a new daily rainfall record for Phoenix.

All of this rain was mostly clear of central Phoenix and Scottsdale, as the highest rain totals in those areas were 0.28 inches recorded near Camelback Road and 40th Street. Similar totals were seen in Tempe, Mesa and Gilbert.

There was more rain Sunday morning, but a lot less of it. Early totals over a three-hour period had the highest marks across the Valley at 0.16 inches in north Glendale.
