PHOENIX — A popular pub in downtown Phoenix has been forced to shelve alcohol sales until its liquor license is renewed.

The British-themed Rose and Crown near Sixth and Adams streets will remain open for food service during the afternoon through January. According to the Arizona Department of Liquor website, the license was pending approval.

The Arizona Republic reported that the manager said the bar would be serving alcohol again in February.

The bar will close by 4 p.m. until the license has been granted. Without liquor sales on New Year’s Eve, that could be a sizable loss of revenue.

Don Phillippi blamed bureaucracy for having to reapply for the permit after a name change.

The spot is known for trivia nights and as a gathering place to watch English soccer on big-screen TVs.

Meanwhile, at least one group of regulars plans to keep watching its favorite soccer team on TVs at the pub.

In a post at Facebook dated shortly before Christmas, the pub thanked customers for sticking with it.
