When anything happens in the world — breaking news, a crazy sports win or something else that people want to talk about — a lot of us turn to Twitter.

The microblogging site gives everyone an online voice, so long as what they want to say doesn’t run for more than 140 characters (don’t get us started on all the changes and exceptions). But it really provides the opportunity for each user to build a community, one handpicked to deliver the news, jokes, information, etc. they want.

It’s also a tool that can be used to measure what happened in the past year. Twitter put together a list of its most popular hashtags of 2016 to sum everything up.

It is important to note that this isn’t Twitter’s take on the biggest stories of 2016. Instead, it’s a summation of what millions of users talked about most in 2016.

We’ve included the list in the slideshow below, along with a link to more information about the subject. CONSIDER YOURSELF WARNED: The show links contain spoilers!
