According to BBC News, singer George Michael has passed away at the age of 53 at his home in Oxfordshire. Michael’s publicist broke the news in a statement.

It is with great sadness that we can confirm our beloved son, brother and friend George passed away peacefully at home over the Christmas period. The family would ask that their privacy be respected at this difficult and emotional time. There will be no further comment at this stage.

Currently, police do not believe there were any suspicious circumstances surrounding his passing, nor a specific cause of death.

Michael found fame in the duo Wham! with school-friend Andrew Ridgeley. Over the course of his career, he sold more than 100 million albums, including bestsellers Faith and Listen Without Prejudice Vol. 1.

The singer was treated for pneumonia in 2011, and it was reported that doctors were to have performed a tracheotomy in order to keep his airways open.
