TEMPE — One of Tempe’s signature events is not what it once was.
The Mill Avenue Block Party will continue, but the plan now is for individual businesses in the area to plan the event.
The event was sponsored and organized by the Fiesta Bowl, but when the Fiesta Bowl was no longer in the Tempe area, a non-profit organization had attempted to maintain the party. Annually coming up with the money to put on the event, however, was becoming too much.
The block party at some points in its history had over 100,000 people before the Fiesta Bowl moved away from Tempe.
According to Kate Borders, executive director of the Downtown Tempe Authority, the event is expected to have somewhere between 20,000 and 30,000 people in attendance this year. As always, the avenue will be closed and the event is free to attend.
