Phoenix high school teacher wins Gaydos & Chad’s teacher tribute

PHOENIX – A Phoenix teacher who currently works with high school students has been named KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Gaydos and Chad Show’s Pay Tribute to a Teacher winner for April, presented by Your Valley Toyota Dealers.

Miguel Herrera teaches in the Computer Studies Magnet Program at Carl Hayden Community High School.

After 20 years of teaching and learning how to instruct virtually throughout the COVID-19 pandemic, he said he enjoys being a part of his students’ lives and approaches every day as a new learning experience.

The time, effort and heart he gives to his profession prompted his wife to nominate him for the $2,500 prize.

In a letter, his wife alluded to the struggles of her husband and other teachers in inner city schools feeling heartbroken and defeated while doing their best to prepare the students despite the many obstacles that may get in the way of a student’s success.

“As a teacher, he is aware of these obstacles but he doesn’t let them get in the way of it trying to help his students be successful in whatever path they decide to take, which is college, career and life,” his wife wrote.

He hopes to spend some of the money by checking out a dinosaur museum in Colorado and Denver with his family.
