Shooting outside LDS church in Salt Lake City leaves 2 dead, 6 injured

Two individuals are dead and six others were left with injuries after a fight in a Salt Lake City church parking lot turned into a deadly shooting, according to a report by KSL.com.

Salt Lake City police said there was at least one shooter, who remains at large.

The shooting took place around 7:30 p.m. outside of a ward meetinghouse belonging to The Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints near Redwood Road and U.S. Highway 215. A funeral service was being held at the time of the shooting.

Three of the victims are in critical condition, according to Salt Lake City police spokesperson Glen Mills.

No potential suspects remained at the site when emergency responders arrived, but a suspect vehicle was seen fleeing nearby.

However, a person was seen being taken out of the meetinghouse in handcuffs on and put into a police car just before 10 p.m.

Police said the suspects and victims were at the service together, and they do not believe the shooter had any animus toward a particular faith. They also don’t think the shooting was random.

“We don’t believe this was a targeted attack against a religion or anything like that,” Salt Lake City Police Chief Brian Redd said.

Mills said the department has “good, solid” leads on the suspect or suspects.

A few of those injured at the parking lot were taken to a nearby hospital before police were able to respond, Mills said.

The FBI’s Salt Lake City field office is involved in the active investigation.
