Tariffs are the top (and, really, the only) topic on this week’s AZ Political Podcast.
My guest this week, Danny Seiden, the president and CEO of the Arizona Chamber of Commerce and Industry, discusses whether those new tariffs from President Donald Trump will cause Arizona’s fortunes to rise or fall and whether they could lead to future fallout for candidates representing the party of the president who implemented them.
Seiden also talks with me about Arizona’s potential tariff winners and losers (he predicts not many of the former — but plenty of the latter, by the way) and what effect Trump’s tariffs will have on Taiwan Semiconductor Manufacturing Company. Will TSMC stay in Arizona?
TSMC has made not only the largest foreign business investment in Arizona with the six proposed “fabs” (manufacturing facilities) — it’s the largest foreign business investment in U.S. history.
And while TSMC will be manufacturing in the U.S. (Trump’s stipulation to avoid tariffs), Danny and I wonder whether TSMC will stick around if the company will have to pay higher prices for the imported materials they need in order to manufacture chips.
I don’t know if we answer how tariffs on imported goods will affect Arizona, but I do know this: I’d like to have some cash imported into my retirement funds because of the effect tariffs have had on my 401K.
