AZ Political Podcast: How congressional hopeful John Trobough became CD1’s ‘AI candidate’

It’s not an insult when I say congressional hopeful John Trobough could be called “the AI candidate.”

I don’t say this because his campaign is run by an AI bot, his speeches are AI written, or that he will rely on agentic AI to craft policy if he wins the Congressional District 1 seat this fall.

My bestowment of that AI title on Trobough, my guest on this week’s AZ Political Podcast, is simply a sign of his desire to go to Washington to make sure politicians don’t screw up the AI revolution.

Trobough says Congress doesn’t understand tech, but with his decades in the tech industry, he does.

Most recently, he ran a Boeing division focused on AI and cyber threat analytics, served as a White House Presidential Innovation Fellow under Presidents Obama and Trump and founded a technology consulting firm.

Trobough told me his deep understanding of tech fueled a responsibility to run. But it hasn’t put him on a mission to usher in the rise of humanity’s AI overlords, because he wants to guide Congress toward proper AI guardrails, while winning the AI war over China.

Speaking of war, I get John Trobough’s thoughts on the Trump Administration’s foray into Iran; how the Pentagon’s budget might be focused on the wrong kind of warfare; and how being a fiscal hawk doesn’t have to clash with his desire to be a hawk on national defense.

We talk about how being raised around the world (his father was with the CIA) has prepared him to serve in public office but hasn’t made him the biggest fan of globalization.

And we discuss what it’s like running against former NFL kicker and fellow Republican Jay Feely — a man Trobough likes but feels doesn’t understands the biggest revolution of our lifetime: AI.

Now, in all fairness, I’d bet Trobough doesn’t understand how to kick a football 61 yards to win a game in Arizona. And neither understands what it feels like to win a political campaign in Arizona.

That is something however, that the third man in CD-1’s Republican Primary, state Rep. Joseph Chaplick, does.
