PHOENIX – As ICE reform legislation works its way through Congress, one of Arizona’s top Democrats is renewing his calls for the impeachment of Homeland Security Secretary Kristi Noem.

“It’s my assessment that Secretary Noem is completely incompetent for this important job at hand,” U.S. Rep. Greg Stanton told KTAR News 92.3 FM’s Arizona’s Morning News on Friday. “She runs one of the most important departments in the entire federal government.”

He has critiqued her for a long time, but more prominent Democrats have been joining his condemnation after this month’s fatal ICE-involved shootings of nurse Alex Pretti and poet Renee Good in Minneapolis. Both Pretti and Good were U.S. citizens.

Why is Greg Stanton calling for Kristi Noem impeachment?

“These are officers, agents on the streets that are not trained, are covering their faces with masks. They don’t automatically have the body cameras on. They’re not getting proper warrants,” Stanton said.

He said the agencies Noem manages aren’t acting according to any appropriate code of conduct like those that govern local police departments.

“It’s totally unacceptable. It’s mismanagement,” Stanton said. “If she were the police chief, she’d be fired, and if President (Donald) Trump won’t fire her, she deserves first to be impeached.”

He spoke several days after Homeland Security Investigations raided multiple Zipps Sports Grill locations across the Valley on Monday, leading to criminal charges against several undocumented migrants.

DHS has also reportedly bought a large warehouse off of Sweetwater Avenue and Dysart Road in Surprise, though its intended use has not been disclosed.
