Person critically injured in shooting that reportedly involved Border Patrol in Arizona

PHOENIX – A person was critically injured Tuesday in a shooting that reportedly involved the U.S. Border Patrol in southern Arizona.

The shooting occurred around 7:30 a.m. near milepost 15 of West Arivaca Road, between Interstate 19 and the Pima County community of Arivaca, according to the Santa Rita Fire District (SRFD).

SRFD and American Medical Response personnel responded to the scene and found one person in critical condition and another in custody.

The patient was airlifted to a regional trauma center.

Officials confirmed to Tucson television station KVOA that the shooting involved a Border Patrol officer.

The Pima County Sheriff’s Department and FBI were assisting with the investigation, KVOA said.

The FBI said it was “investigating an alleged assault on a federal officer” near Arivaca, a community about 10 miles from the border. The area is a common path for drug smugglers and migrants who illegally cross the border, so agents regularly patrol there, according to The Associated Press.

KTAR News 92.3 FM reached out to U.S. Customs and Border Protection about the incident and is awaiting a response.
