It’s nearly impossible to imagine the fear experienced by those who are going about their lives when a person with a gun begins firing into a crowd.
The chaos and terror must ripple through everyone as people struggle to get out of the hail of bullets. If they are lucky enough to find somewhere safe, those minutes spent waiting for law enforcement to show up must be agony.
Even after the police show up, most people will not know exactly what’s going on or the whereabouts of the shooter.
That’s why the words of one San Bernardino police officer are going viral. The unnamed officer was caught on camera urging people to be calm as they were evacuated from the Inland Regional Center following Wednesday’s shooting that left 14 people dead and 21 injured.
He tells the frightened crowd to “try to relax.” As the person filming passes by, he offered more assurance.
“I’ll take a bullet before you do, that’s for damn sure,” he said.
The video continues for a while after and shows the crowd of people making their way to an elevator, where they were taken to safety.
Both suspects in the shooting were later killed in a shootout with police.
