PHOENIX — A Phoenix furniture chain has filed for bankruptcy and informed workers that layoffs will begin early next year.

According to an online report, the Room Store filed for bankruptcy Dec. 18. Layoffs were to begin mid-February.

The retail company, founded in 1993, has stores in Mesa, Glendale, Goodyear, Mesa, Paradise Valley and Phoenix.

The Phoenix Business Journal said owner Alan Levitz would be closing stores, but he didn’t say which ones would be affected.

The family-owned Room Store collected $74 million in sales last year but has been sued for payment by the Phoenix Suns, the Arizona Republic and a manufacturer in China, for hundreds of thousands of dollars each.
