Why this West Valley financial firm is committed to empowering single moms

PHOENIX — Single mothers across the Valley facing financial hardship can turn to Asset Preservation Wealth & Tax for meaningful support. That dedication is why the company is featured in KTAR’s Community Spotlight this March.

We’re shining that light on Asset Preservation Wealth & Tax for its partnership with Helping Hands for Single Moms, a nonprofit focused on helping women achieve financial independence.

It’s a mission especially important to Stewart Willis, the Surprise-based company’s president.

“This organization is all about helping out single moms, low-income moms, get post-secondary education, really helping them complete college,” Willis told KTAR News 92.3 FM.

Right now, Asset Preservation Wealth & Tax is backing donations dollar-for-dollar up to $10,000. Donations to Helping Hands can be made online. Mention Asset Preservation when giving so your contribution can be matched.

“This is also eligible for the Arizona State tax credit, so, if you owe money to the state of Arizona, this counts dollar for dollar against your debt,” Willis said. “It really costs you nothing by donating.”

Why company president is passionate about helping single moms

Helping Hands for Single Moms provides assistance with education costs, clothing and holiday gifts for children. Since 2002, the charity has helped hundreds of families earn a college degree, including 51 moms who graduated in 2024 with an average GPA of 3.1.

“We truly believe that life is all about forks in the road — right? — decisions you make, and once you’ve gone down that path of college, it really can change generations to come,” Willis said.

Willis’ passion for the cause comes from personal experience. He watched his own mother struggle, and he says the support she received changed their family’s future.

“Had she not had people reach out to help her career wise, financially, etc., she would not be in the position she is today. Now she’s retired, financially set, all because a few people really just gave her that helping hand,” Willis said. “I want to do everything I can to help in this organization.”

And he backs that commitment with action.

“If you believe that you can help or that you want to help a single mom get through college so she isn’t dependent on the government … but independent — truly independent — then we would love you to help out, and we will match dollar for dollar up to $10,000,” Willis said.
