are rising. Tourists are
back. Small shops and
restaurants are opening
their doors.
Reform of our nation's
immigration system
is a divisive issue
and the imperative for
lawmakers to produce
a comprehensive bill
that is both equitable
and benefi cial to our
economy has never
been more urgent.
Most people would
be happy with a
prosperous and welleducated
next-door
neighbor poised to
become very wealthy
over the next 20 years.
Arizona has just such a
neighbor on our southern
border, the nation
of Mexico.
As a mayor, I've
been fortunate to learn
many new things. One
thing I didn't expect to
learn is the aerospace
and agriculture industries
in Arizona have
very similar challenges.
President Obama
had it right when he
outlined his federal
reform proposal earlier
this year and stated
that immigration, at its
core, is about people;
adding that we must
not forget that "we
used to be them."
As Congress considers
immigration
reform, we all have
a responsibility to
encourage our elected
representatives to
collaborate until they
pass a meaningful
solution.
As the Gang of
Eight pushes forward
on immigration reform,
the prospect of
real change gives us
the opportunity as Arizonans
and Americans
to ask, What do we
want from our relationship
with Mexico?
